on the work

Dalika Dance Theater was formed, in 2004, by Vasso Yiannakopoulou and Tassos Paleoroutas. Our main goal is to create performances centred on dancing, while at the same time using theatrical devices, in an attempt to give to the audience, apart from a spectacle, a way to help them interpret facets of human behaviour and culture.

We believe that dancing is the artistic expression of the first and most abstract language, body language and it constitutes one of the first acts of culture. This archetypical character of dance and the way it is connected with human instincts, intrigues us and urges us to use it as a way of expression.

We want to initiate, in a way, a dialogue between our lower instincts and our high culture so that, through our work, we can give an insight to real human needs in the contemporary world. To reach that end, after we have analyzed the initial idea, all the participants are called to contribute to the project with their own creative material. When bringing the material on stage, we aim to achieve a fine balance between the everyday and the exceptional. We will know we have achieved our goal when the spectator senses the poetry on stage, of art and of real life.

 «Maria goes to the river» 2010

The performance “Maria goes to the river” is a journey. A journey through our inner and outer landscape. The course that Maria follows could be any course: life itself or our everyday routine. The river is the destination, that to which we aim; and it could belong to the sphere of desire, of duty or it could simply be the inevitable. The piece focuses on the confusion we experience, on the fear that often – almost always – defines us, and on our continual need to discover our personal truth.

  «NOBLE ESCAPE»  2008

‘Noble Escape’ deals with the needs of love and companionship in a world where most people are afraid, or even ashamed to admit to themselves that the loss of these feelings may lead one to frustration. Because, almost for everyone, one’s egoism comes first. In order to further underline the necessity of these values in modern life, we used a canvas consisting of two homeless people that manage to overcome their everyday struggle for survival and concentrate on the joy of friendship or maybe just on the few moments in life that one experiences a sense of fulfilment. While at the same time, our statement is that homeless people have the right to love, to have fun, to care about someone, to dream.

 «Nowhere»2006

Everyday, people follow signs that indicate a point which is the destination that they have chosen. Reaching there, they realize that they are not at the place that the signs were showing. The people are far from the place they wanted to go. The distance that separates them from it is immeasurable. It is perhaps the length of a street or a whole world. Many people never get there. They just accept the signs that they follow and it is as if they never travel, as if they stay at the same point…

People have the need to prove explicitly where exactly they are. As if they are pursued by an uncertainty that implies that they may be… Nowhere.

[Extracts from the article of author-painter John Berger, Ten reference points of political orientation, on which the choreography was based.]

Intention of Dalika Dance Theater is the exploration of the disoriented ego. In a time of searching for lived experiences and points of contact of our lonely walks all of us, wandering more or less like immigrants, even in our own country, the only thing we have left is ourselves: our hands, our eyes, our legs, our shoulders our bodies and everything that darkens our face at night when we go to sleep without shelter in…    NOWHERE.

Fyllo kai Ftero_photo S. Premus

 «FYLLO kai FTERO» 2005

“fyllo kai ftero” is a greek expression used to show the act of disintegration of something

Τhe subject of this choreography is the rupture of the relationship between two friends, who grew up together, but chose separate paths in life. There comes a point when they cannot maintain their personal balance or keep the realtionship between them going. The piece focuses on the turning-points in life, that unconsiously lead to the alienation from our aims and the people we love. Through the theatrical and kinetic adaptation of this idea, the performance attempts to shed light to our daily experiences and deepen our understanding of human nature.

 «DIGONO»2005

This duet attempts to formulate a comment on human communication. Two  people on a brief (or eternal) journey. A relationship that begins effortlessly and harmoniously, “come il fault”. Obstacles in their way: the armour of uniformity, which encages as much as it protects, as well as the need for differentiation through conflict and antagonism. Resistance subsides. Communication calls for nudity and power. Balance is fragile. It is accomplished through labour and torment. The circle only closes temporarily. The three scenes are potentially repeated in space and time, again and again.
